Image Forensics
Stutchman Forensic Laboratory provides Image Forensic services including:
- Image Enhancement
- Image Authenticity & Integrity
- Photo Pattern Comparison (Photogrammetry)
- Image Detail Analysis
Image Enhancement
Forensic Photo Enhancement helps clarify information that an image contains. In many cases an image may be hard to interpret due to a variety of factors, including low lighting, poor photo resolution, motion blurring, or other distortions. Our forensic imaging team is able to enhance photos to make it easier to see all of the information that was captured by the camera.
Image Authenticity & Integrity
Forensic Photo Authenticity Analysis helps determine the authenticity and integrity of forensic images.
When the authenticity or integrity of a forensic image (photograph or video) is in question, our analysts conduct detailed forensic analysis to determine if material has been deleted, added, altered or changed in the image.

Photo Pattern Comparison (Photogrammetry)
Photo Pattern Comparison is technically known as Photogrammetry. As defined by the American Society for Photogrammetry, Photogrammetry is “The art, science and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects, and the environment through a process of recording, measuring and interpreting photographic images.” In many cases photographic images are taken from video frames.
Using Photogrammetry, the height of a suspect in crime videos from such places as convenience stores can be calculated scientifically. There are different ways in which the calculations can be performed. For example:
- Where there are known, measurable objects still present where they were, and in the same location as at the time of the videotaped incident. Known objects could be counters, merchandise racks, shelves, newspaper stands, etc.
- Reverse Projection Photogrammetry can be performed by placing an object of known dimension into the scene and capturing the images using the same security camera in the same position as it was the time of the incident. For this type of analysis, a visit to the scene is necessary. However in some types of photogrammetry measurements can be made by an investigation in that area and forwarded to our lab.
Photogrammetry technology can also be used forensically in situations such as accident reconstruction.
Image Detail Analysis
Forensic Image Detail Analysis is most commonly used for the purpose of identification and comparison of objects depicted, including suspect faces, guns, weapons, clothing, tattoos, vehicle descriptions, license plates, etc. Frequently, forensic image analysis is used to identify or compare suspects captured on video, usually in the process of committing a crime or in the background of a video or surveillance image.
